Introducing the Holiday eCommerce Calendar … on Shopify

Yo -

Yesterday was an important milestone in eCommerce for 2022.

Did you know that yesterday was a holiday? Some people call it “Indigenous People’s Day” and some people call it “Columbus Day,” but no matter what you call it, it marks the official beginning of the holiday season. This is it. This is when everyone who sells stuff makes their nut for the year.

You got 12 weeks starting now, and the clock is ticking.

There’s no such thing as a Shopify eCommerce Calendar, but there should be. If there were, it would look like this:

  • October 10 — Columbo-Digenous Day (pre-plan your holiday promo calendar for social, paid search, and email)

  • October 31 — Halloween (look at the scary economic forecasts for 2023 to get in the mood)

  • November 8 — TaskHusky Day … when all good boys and girls have submitted ALL Shopify tweaks and dev tasks to TaskHusky in order to get them done, and even this is pushing it.

  • November 11 — Veterans Day

  • November 14 — Launch BFCM Promotions You Procrastinating Fool Day (this is your last chance)

  • November 24 — Thanksgiving (no naps after eating turkey, you’ve got work to do … like taking that new holiday hero image live on your Shopify site)

  • November 25 through 28 — BFCM craziness (sell like the wind!)

  • December 18 through 26 — Hanukkah

  • December 19 — Ship All by Now Lest Ye Perish and Fail Day (I just made that one up, but true)

  • December 25 — Christmas

  • December 26 through 30 — Annual Return, Exchange, and Gift Card Redemption Blizzard (not a holiday, but worth knowing about)

  • January 1 — New Years Day

  • January 2 — Reconcile the Bank Statements and Count the Cash Day

And since you will no doubt follow this calendar, you are now thinking about how to create holiday promos. So, we are going to do something a little different today.

Here’s your Ultimate Get Ready for BFCM Resources List. Don’t panic … just do.

Happy Selling,

Zach

The Ultimate Shopify BFCM Resource List

OK, saying “ultimate” sounds super click-baity. But what the heck. Let’s be helpful … starting with:

We wrote this article four years ago. But you know what? It’s as valid today as it was then. The idea is that discounting alone is a bit lazy. Strategic value-building is better, protects your profits, and doesn’t lower customer perceived product values when it comes time to buy from you again.

Klaviyo is one of the most popular apps for marketing optimization in the Shopify universe. You see their apps listed again and again in this newsletter. So, it’s worth taking a look at what they think about the topic.

Pixel Union is one of the most popular makers of Shopify themes. We have reviewed more than a hundred stores using one of their themes. And they are respected in the Shopify community. They created this e-book on generating holiday engagement, so they probs know what they are talking about.

This is another blast from the past. But your email list is you goose that lays the gold. Each year we get Shopify merchants telling us they reuse this article to get their head in the holiday email game.

Shopify keeps a collection of holiday planning articles on one page. This is that page. Dive in and feel the Shopify holiday love.

Let’s do one more.

Out of the Sandbox is another major theme developer for Shopify. So, if you are looking to tweak your site for the holidays — whether it is on one of their themes or not — they give some good advice here.
