Let’s Do Something Different this Week … the Shopify Top 5

Hello —

So, if you have been following the best college football team of the year — and I know that you have — then you know that our home team ended the season on a high note. A VERY high note. The Michigan State Spartans won the Peach Bowl. Were you watching? You know I was. And when there was just 22 seconds left in the game, Michigan State was leading by just 3 points and Pitt was driving for the goal. Then MSU linebacker Cal Haladay intercepted a pass on the 22-yardline and ran it back for a touchdown to seal the game … holy crap they were using smelling salts to wake me up ‘cuz I blacked out from the excitement and fell face-first into my bowl of Chicken Nugget nachos. I’ll be cleaning ranch dipping sauce out of my nose for a week. Happy Freak’in New Year!

So, have you noticed that everyone is doing end of the year lists again? It’s like a right of passage. And I wanted to have a little variety in the content this week, so I put together a list of our own … sort of. I took a look at the year-end rankings of the Top 5 Shopify stores for 2021. This list changes all the time as web traffic ebbs and flows. But it turns out that we have tackled all 5 of the current Top 5 Shopify sites in this weekly missive. So let’s count them down together, shall we? Happy Selling,Zachary

The Top 5 Shopify Websites of 2021

Number 5: GymShark

We reviewed GymShark just about 1 year ago when they were #14. Well, this retailer of workout attire and accessories has jumped all the way up to the top of our list this year. In our review we talked about their stellar home page and that their tracking apps were interfering with navigation and usability.

Number 4: JB Hi-Fi

Time flies, but it was just 8 weeks ago that we reviewed the #4 top Shopify store of the year. They are one positionhigher than they were just 2 months ago, and that is not surprising for an electronics retailer at Christmas time, right. We complimented their aggressive use of deferred/scheduled payment programs but considered the lack of Express payment options a big miss.

Number 3: FashionNova

Back in March FashionNova was siting at #5. In this rarefied air it is hard to make additional moves, but they have catwalked their way up the ladder in Shopify-land by 2 more spots to #3. But that translates into a BIG move among all websites, from position 15k up to position 2600. And that is impressive as heck. If you remember, in our review we complimented their exceptional navigation flow but thought that their SEO needed a serious revamp … which it appears to have gotten. Maybe they are readers of this newsletter? If so, YOU’RE WELCOME FashionNova!

Number 2: Spigen

November must have been a lucky month for Shopify sites reviewed in this newsletter. In position #2 is a site we reviewed just 6 weeks ago. Spigen was #2 then and they are still #2 now. This retailer of cool cell phone gadgets and related tech is holding steady. We discussed how they deployed a “headless website” model by hollowing out the Shopify shell and inserting .NET code to make the site load faster. It’s pretty interesting stuff if you’re interested.

Drumroll please ….

The Number 1 Shopify Site of 2021 is … Cettire

Yes … this is ANOTHJER Shopify website that we reviewed in November of this year. I must be on a roll or something. Anyway … this is not only the #1 website in all of Shopify, but it is a publicly-traded company with a market cap of more than a B-B-B-Billion dollars. In our review of this luxury fashion and accessories brand we talked about how they were valued by the markets, that they smartly kept the website simple and clean, but that they were too reliant on paid Google ads and that this is likely to bite them in the handbags someday.

Thanks folks. Let’s make 2022 a raging success for all of us.
