10-Minute Teardown of PooPourri.com on Shopify +BONUS Content
Hello -
Holy crap, folks! Welcome to 2021. Calling last year sh!##y would be an understatement. Now that 2020 is circling the drain, here’s to hoping you have a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
But it’s Tuesday, so it must be time for your favorite weekly eCommerce email where we rake the muck on some of the most successful Shopify stores in the world to show you where they stink and where they don’t.
Speaking of stinky sh!#, here’s this week’s target.
Happy Selling,
Zachary
This Week’s Target: PooPourri.com
Company Profile
PooPourri is from Scentsible LLC. They make and market a product to takes the stink out of … well, you know. They are one of the … ahem … sanitary products that The Harmon Brothers marketing agency launched, using humor to build the brand (the other was SquattyPotty). A real product attacking the unpleasant subject matter directly, without apologies, and with a rye wit. The technique didn’t stink, scaling to sell millions of units within just a few months using a viral video campaign — more than 43 million views so far — and spot on-brand design across their efforts.
Make sure that you read all the way to the end to see links to the initial video and other marketing that they are doing.
The Good Stuff
Got to admit, we love this brand. They have a laser-like focus on all things potty-humor but still manage to pinch-off a professional design.
Number one, this is another one of those times when automated page speed scores just do not work. These guys worked really hard to push-out a website that drops a load of quality content first because they know that customers just can’t wait. The full page load takes a while, but the user experience is slick as … well, you know.
Number two, the collection pages work great with Best Sellers well-identified and upfront. The product pages are clean with everything you need to know and see strategically placed above the fold — info, call-to-action, social proof are all easy to see on desktops and mobile.
The Add-to-Cart confirmation appears cleanly with great implementations of add-on marketing.
Needs Improvement
This website is really good. All critiques are nit-pics.
They only deploy one Express Checkout option. Seems like they should have more to help conversions.
Image ALT tags exist, but … meh. And they are not ADA compliant.
The codebase is a dump. They have a ton of stuff set to not load just sitting out there. A lot of them are unused fonts and other items. It’s not creating a problem right now, but if left unflushed, it will plug things up at some point.
Apps They Deploy
We ran a scan to see what Shopify apps & supporting services they are deploying. Let’s take a look:
PayPal — Express Payment options.
HotJar — website heatmaps and behavior analytics.
Klaviyo — eCommerce marketing and automation.
ThoughtMetric — Social media analytics.
QuantCast — Audience insights.
Digital Window — Customer account management.
Olark — Customer chat.
Zotabox — Onsite marketing.
Bugsnag — Captures website errors.
POWr — Galleries and forms.
Privy — Customer engagement.
Unbounce — Ad network.
DoubleClick — Ad network.
This may not be a complete list.
Marketing Stuff They Do
The company was already selling well. But then they contracted to create one of the most successful viral video campaigns in history.
.
Here are two Facebook/Instagram ad campaigns that they are running right now.
