10-Minute Teardown for HYPOP.com.au

Hello -

When you receive this email, it will be September 1

. Think about that for a minute. We are just two and a half months away from Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Yes, 2020 is a very strange year … a crazy strange year … so we don’t know what this holiday season will look like. But we do know that it is still going to be the most important time of the year for eCommerce once again.

Get ready folks. Let us know if you need help.

Here is this week’s teardown.

Happy Selling,

Zachary

This Week’s Target: hypop.com.au

Company Profile

Hypop is one of Shopify’s top 700 websites and it is a top 90k website worldwide — these are seriously strong numbers. They sell camera and video equipment and accessories from cases to tripods. Their target market is professional marketing and content creators.

The Good Stuff

This website gets down to business right away. They have a TON of products — which is always an organizational challenge. But they have a thoughtful main menu, to ability to search by type of product or brand, and a solid organization of categories. I think they did a solid job keeping it all as straight as possible.

They are a photography company, so I expected great images. But they do not get too caught up in the “art” of the photos. Instead, the images are practical, show the products well, and demonstrate those products in real-life (work) settings.

Product pages are well designed “above-the-fold” to reduce friction when buying. Many customers will find all the info they need without having to scroll. But the page still has tons of info and content.

The have a good range of payment and financing options. I always say, if a customer wants to throw money at you, do not quibble with their method of payment.

Apps They Deploy

We ran a scan to see what Shopify Apps they are deploying. Here’s what we found:

  • Back in Stock — customer product notification system.

  • zipPay — purchase financing.

  • AfterPay — purchase financing.

  • LatitudePay — purchase financing.

  • ZenDesk — customer support.

  • Klaviyo — reporting and eCommerce analytics.

  • Facebook Tracking Pixels — the de facto standard for ad and social retargeting.

This may not be a complete list.

Needs Improvement

OK … page speed is terrible. Now, I have a lot of empathy here. These guys jam the heck of a lot of photos on the site. Makes sense … they sell photography stuff. All that stuff makes the site heavy. But there are 311 (!!!) external calls and some of them are broken, the browser caching is darned near nonexistent, and JavaScript is getting in the way if user experience. There is no excuse for that stuff.

There are too many disrupting notices and click-through and chatbots and yadda yadda yadda. A few of those things can help with conversions. In my experience, too many of them distract and slow things down like crazy.
